Saltire Sgian Dubh

This Saltire, Scottish Flag, sgian dubh makes a fantastic addition to any Scottish Highland Dress outfit.

This Sgian Dubh is imported from Scotland directly from the Art Pewter Company. This one is fashioned with with a Saltire ( Saint Andrew's Cross) in the hilt. Stainless Steel Blade.

In Gaelic, sgian means knife or dagger, dubh means black. Many historians feel that the term black means secret, or hidden, as in the word blackmail. Sgian dubhs seem to have first began to be worn full-time in the stocking top in the early to mid 1800's when the accepted courtesy of the day demanded that, when entering the home of a friend, no weapons could remain concealed. It seems that a sgian dubh would be removed from it's hiding place, a hole in the jacket or the infamous armpit daggers of the Scots, and then placed in the stocking top of the gentleman's kilt hose as a convenient place to display it.
